Drug tourism is renewed in Mexico

01.10.2012

Zocalo Saltillo, one of the leading publications in Mexico released information about the new way of money making invented by the Mexican tour operators. Using the fact that the crime situation in the region is far from being quiet, they began to rent out the armored cars for tourists.

The idea to rent the armored cars appeared in the Mexican state of Coahuila, where the crime rate has highly increased in recent years due to increase of the drug cartels. The situation is aggravated by the recent escape from the local jail of 131 highly dangerous prisoners.

Interestingly, this type of business is not new to Mexico. About 2 years ago in the price lists of the travel agencies the tours for not so safe areas of the country were available. The service is called - "drug tourism”. The travelers can visit the particular places of fierce fighting between the drug lords, and especially lucky ones can even see them in person. Also, tourists were invited to cross the US-Mexican border illegally, or visit the Tepito district - one of the most criminal places in Mexico.
