During the recent speech in “Brookings Research Center” of Washington the ex-head of the UN, Kofi Anan, shared his position against the punitive measures against the World drug addiction and recommended to simplify and fully decriminalize the use of drugs.
“If you look at the results of the punitive methods against drug crimes of Felipe Calderon, the president of Mexico, you can see that they are absolutely ineffective, - Anan stated. – As a result, too many addicts have already died.”
Also the diplomat emphasized the fact that results of the report of Global Commission on drug politics, where he contributed a lot, turned out to be the recommendations to the decriminalization of drugs and not to legalization. “We have placed too many young people into the jail for the trifling drug dozes," Kofi Annan said.
The UN secretary general also noted that the world is more oriented on the elimination of the supply and no one pays attention at the demand, which requires the effective fight measures as well. “We need achieve this via education and medicine and not with the help of severe punitive methods,” he added.
